Background and Services

psychologist, sunshine coast, Australia, psychotherapist, therapist, therapy, Queensland, online

Patrick's Background

I am a registered psychologist based at Caloundra on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, providing both face-to-face and online  services. The purpose of my role is to work with you so we can develop an understanding of your emotional experiences and difficulties to lead you to relief from symptoms, greater self-awareness, improved relationships and increased life satisfaction.

I have worked in a variety of settings since I began practising as a psychologist in 2006. This has included working with individuals, teams and organisations. When working with individuals, I have provided counselling and coaching services. Counselling has included supporting people to make major life transitions, including in their careers. Coaching has primarily involved working with leaders of organisations to understand and manage themselves more effectively, and to improve working relationships with team members and colleagues.

Through my early training as a psychologist, I developed counselling skills in cognitive-behavioural therapy, solutions-focussed therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and narrative therapy. In recent years, I have undertaken skills development in somatic (body-based) therapy  and long-term therapy (also known as psychotherapy), based upon the work of Carl Jung. I have found these modalities of treatment to be highly effective for supporting people through persistent psychological difficulties and suffering.

My development in long-term therapy has included Sandplay Therapy, which is effective for working with people of all ages, including children and adolescents, in a safe, contained and supported way.

My training and qualifications include:

  • Registered Psychologist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (APHRA) – since 2006.
  • Master of Organisational Psychology (Griffith University)
  • Post-Graduate Diploma of Psychology (Queensland University of Technology)
  • Bachelor of Psychology (Queensland University of Technology)
  • Sandplay Therapy (Currently in training with Sandplay Therapy Association of New Zealand and Australia)
  • Certificate in Social Psychology of Risk (Centre for Learning and Leadership in Risk)
  • Leadership Styles and Organisational Climate (HayGroup/Korn Ferry)
  • Emotional Intelligence (Mayer, Salovey and Caruso Emotional Intelligence Framework)
  • Team Management Profile (Team Management Systems)
  • Occupational Personality Questionannire (SHL)
  • Printing Machinist Trade Certificate

Approach and Issues Addressed

I have an empathetic, encouraging and completely non-judgemental approach for working with people across a range of life challenges and difficulties. I welcome people who have a clinical diagnosis or those who have become stuck by difficulties that hold them back from living a full life, including:

  • Trauma (developmental, relationships, PTSD)
  • Depression and Anxiety
  • Anger issues
  • Diminished satisfaction and engagement in life
  • Leadership challenges
  • Work and career issues

Depending on the needs of individuals, treatment can range from short-term alleviation of symptoms to long-term therapy that works through persistent and complex difficulties and challenges.

Services

I offer the following services in person or online:

  • Counselling – Usually shorter-term treatment to address specific challenges and alleviate symptoms.
  • Psychotherapy – Longer treatment for persistent and troubling difficulties.
  • Vocational support – Supporting people (usually around mid-life) to respond to a vocational calling.
  • Leadership development – This service focusses on addressing persistent challenges or difficulties that limit a leader's ability to manage interpersonally and in demanding roles.
